Portico Care Centre's Community Values

7 CHARACTERISTICS OF A THRIVING CARE TEAM

(WITH LEADERS AND VOLUNTEERS SETTING THE EXAMPLE)

1. KINDNESS IN ACTION

We demonstrate genuine care for our clients, volunteers, and staff team. We show compassion through our tone, facial expressions, and words — reflecting dignity and respect in every interaction.

2. GRACE FOR MINOR ISSUES

If a team member offends me in a minor way, I will choose grace and let it go. I won’t revisit or share the issue with others — unity and peace are worth protecting.

3. COURAGE FOR MAJOR ISSUES

If an issue feels major, I won’t bury it. I will bring it to the right person at the right time, speaking truth with grace. If I’m not ready to do that yet, I will remain silent until I can do so constructively.

4. INNOVATION AND LEARNING ENCOURAGED

Thriving teams are open to learning, adapting, and growing. Asking thoughtful questions and exploring creative solutions helps us serve our community better.

5. REFRESHINGLY POSITIVE

We are “Faucets,” not “Drains.” We choose encouragement over criticism, gratitude over complaint, and joy over negativity. If I can’t say something in a respectful way, I will wait until I can.

6. BUILD PEACE, NOT FIRE

We don’t spread negativity — we build trust and unity. If I make a mistake, I’ll apologize quickly and sincerely. Restoring relationships matters more than being right.

7. PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

We strive to do every task with excellence — even the unseen ones. When I need help, I ask. When I make a mistake, I own it. We serve our clients and community as an expression of care and integrity.

WHEN HANDLING MAJOR ISSUES

Pick your battles. Choose wisely what requires attention.

Pause first. Wait at least 24 hours before addressing the issue.

Have a direct, respectful conversation. Explain how the situation affected you.

Follow up. If the problem continues, or if the other person refuses to meet, involve your supervisor or a member of the Care Centre leadership team.

Document the details. Note dates, discussions, and outcomes.

Don’t stew. Bitterness only hurts you and the team.

Don’t spread it. Avoid sharing conflict details with others. If you do, apologize promptly to restore trust.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you ever experience harassment, discrimination, or any form of illegal behaviour, please report it immediately to a member of Portico Care Centre leadership. These issues are taken seriously and will be addressed promptly and confidentially.
